There are several TYPES OF COMPETITION FORMAT that can be used.
Single elimination: This is the draw used in international tennis tournaments like Wimbledon. The winner advances to the next round; the loser is eliminated completely. It is important for organizers to realize that some tournament structures, such as the single round elimination tournament, do not promote or utilize participation. During these tournaments, you get one chance, when you lose, you are out. However, it does have its benefits when there is not much time available for participation or if you have a large number of participants, and not many available courts.
Double elimination: A player or team must lose twice before being eliminated. Most participants/teams enjoy the double-elimination tournament as it enables participants/teams to have an “off” game and still have a chance of winning. If a loss is recorded in the winner’s bracket, they move to the loser bracket and eventually can emerge as the tournament winner. However, if this participant/team makes it to the finals against the winner in the “winner’s bracket”, they would have to beat the “winner’s bracket” participant/team twice in order to claim the tournament champion. The double tournament requires more time and available courts than the single-elimination tournament.
Consolation tournament: The first-round losers go into a new draw and play for a consolation title.
Round-robin: All competitors play with each other and the one with the most victories wins or advances to the next round.
The draw is vital to ensure the success of a tournament. If the number of entries in a tournament is the power of two (i.e., 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128) the draw can be a complete one with no byes needed.
Generally, byes will be required. The number of byes can be calculated by subtracting the number of entries from the next highest power of two. So, if there are 27 entries, the first round will have five byes in a 32-bracket draw.
The number of byes should be evenly distributed between the top and bottom halves of the draw. If the number of byes is uneven, then the extra bye should be in the bottom half of the draw.
A tournament can be ruined if the top teams/players meet in the first rounds. Seeding avoids this happening. Seeding is worked out on rankings or past records. Establish how many teams/players are to be seeded. The top seed is placed at the top of the draw, the second seed at the bottom; the only way they will be able to meet in a knockout draw is in the final. Once the seeded teams/players are placed in the draw, the others are drawn at random.
